There’s a slice of paradise in Pueblo County, and you have a standing invitation to stop by when the weather’s just right.
Nancy Tremain owns and operates Nancy’s Country Gardens along 27th Lane on the St. Charles Mesa. She was compelled to set up shop following what she calls her “semi-retirement” from the corporate world in 2019. However, her green thumb is something of a family tradition. “We are garden people,” Tremain said of her father and grandfather in a recent interview. “I love flowers.” Opening Nancy’s Country Gardens was the next natural step in her quest toward simplifying her life and building upon her passion for plants.
And this so-called love of flowers translates into a labor of love for Tremain. Everything that’s sold at Nancy’s Country Gardens is grown there. She specializes in growing 45 types of perennials that are tolerant of southern Colorado’s simmering summers, such as purple penstemon, dianthus, and Shasta daisies. You can also pick up some succulents if that’s more your style.
If you’re looking for a unique bouquet for your mother on her special day, or for your significant other on your anniversary, then you’re invited to swing by the nursery and pick your own to take home! In fact, this feature of the nursery is a point of pride for Tremain. She tells me that it gives her immense satisfaction to see people walk the grounds and pick out bouquets that are meaningful to them.
If you need some inspiration, Nancy’s Country Gardens offers pre-made mini bouquets from in-season, fresh flowers that are hand cut one day before they’re sold. Tremain has had some success with these bouquets. In fact, she sold out of them at the Beulah Arts & Crafts Festival as well as past Supporters of Horticultural Education plant sales.
We’re just around the corner from the milder months of Spring, and Tremain is extending an invitation to anyone who wants to swing by the nursery to take in the sights of her homegrown perennials. All you have to do is give her a call before you head to 27th Lane in Pueblo County and she’ll be happy to show you around. Her number is listed on her website: https://www.nancyscountrygardens.com/
If you can’t make it out to Nancy’s Country Gardens and you’re hoping to get your own nook of paradise finally going, Tremain has these words of wisdom, “Make sure you prep your garden area before planting anything at all and ensure that you have soil that is good for growing.” Tips on soil health can be found at the CSU Extension website: https://pueblo.extension.colostate.edu/programs/gardening-horticulture/sheries-articles/a-great-garden-starts-with-soil/
